Amateur Ghost Hunter’s Guide

Looking forward to venturing beyond the veil and peeking into the other side? Ghost hunting is an exciting and mysterious hobby that blends history, science, and the paranormal. Whether you’re a skeptic or a believer, understanding the basics of ghost hunting can make your stay at one of our haunted locations more meaningful and safe.

A Short List of Ghost Hunting Equipment

To increase your chances of experiencing paranormal activity, consider using the following tools:

  1. Ouija Board – A controversial tool used to communicate with spirits. Use with caution and never alone. Many stories of unwanted ghosts attaching themselves to the living began from Ouija board experiences.

  2. Spirit Box – A radio scanning device that spirits may use to form words or messages. You ask the questions and the Spirit Box gives answers. In the Estes Method, one person or a group of people asks questions. Then, another person, who is blindfolded with sound proof headphones connected to the spirit box repeats what they hear. This reduces the chances of being influenced into hearing things you want to hear.

  3. EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomenon) Recorder – Captures voices and sounds that are not heard during investigations but can be analyzed later.

  4. EMF (Electromagnetic Field) Detector – Measures electromagnetic fluctuations which may indicate a spirit’s presence.

  5. Thermal Camera – Detects heat signatures and cold spots that could suggest paranormal activity.

  6. Flashlight – Essential for visibility and safety in dark locations.

  7. Notebook and Pen – Useful for logging occurrences, feelings, and observations during investigations.

  8. Motion Sensors – Alerts you to movement in an area with no visible cause.

  9. Pendulum- A pendulum is an object (such as a coin or a crystal) on a string or chain. You can use it to ask spirits “yes” and “no” questions. Before you begin, make sure you are holding the pendulum by the end of the string or chain and that it is still. Then ask any entities in the room what is a “yes” answer and wait for the pendulum to move in a specific manner (i.e. spinning) and then what is a “no” answer (i.e. swinging side to side).

  10. Tarot Cards- Tarot cards can be used as a tool for spirit communication, much like a Ouija board or pendulum. The idea is that spirits or energies can influence the cards drawn to deliver messages.

Places to Get Ghost Hunting Equipment

Retail Stores

  1. Toy stores and aisles that sell games will often have Ouija boards. You can alternatively make your own Ouijia board on paper, cardboard, or a small plank of wood and by using a small teacup as a planchette. Make sure you include the Hello and Goodbye.

  2. Various retail stores will carry flashlights, notebooks, voice recorders, and pens.

  3. Local metaphysical stores and some book stores will carry tarot cards and pendulums. You can also make your own pendulum.

Basic Ghost Hunting Techniques

  1. Choose a Haunted Location – Either stay in your room or politely ask hotel staff or the owners of a property for permission to set up in a different, out of the way area.

  2. Set Up Your Equipment – Place EMF detectors, motion sensors, and cameras in key locations where activity is suspected. Try your best to get set up in a way that gets as little interference from the living people with you as possible.

  3. Remain Calm and Respectful – Approach investigations with an open but skeptical mind and always respect the spirits. Never antagonize or berate the spirits. Be kind and respectful to hotel staff and property owners. Always be aware of any disruptions you may be causing to neighbours and other hotel guests.

  4. Ask Questions – Use the spirit box or EVP recorder to ask direct questions and allow time for responses.

  5. Take Notes and Record Evidence – Documenting findings is essential for later review.

  6. Analyze Evidence – Listen to recordings, review footage, and compare notes to identify any unexplained occurrences.

Safety Tips for Ghost Hunting

  1. Never Hunt Alone – Best to go with a group for safety and credibility.

  2. Obtain Permission – Never trespass on private property without permission. Always ask the hotel staff or property owner.

  3. Protect Your Spiritual Self – Some believe carrying protective items like salt, iron, talismans, or religious symbols can help ward off negative energy. Some people also believe that you should burn some sage and cleanse yourself in the smoke to keep spirits from following you.

  4. Protect Your Physical Self – Stay aware of your surroundings. Bring flashlights, jackets, and comfy shoes. Old buildings, cemeteries, and forests can be hazardous, so watch your step.

  5. Know When to Leave – If you feel threatened, overwhelmed, or unwell, leave the location immediately.

  6. Don’t Provoke Spirits – Be respectful.  Taunting or challenging spirits may invite negative experiences.

  7. Close Sessions Properly – If using a Ouija board or spirit communication tools, always say goodbye to end the session properly.
